Exhibition Blurb
Windows Into Queer Lives is rooted in the belief that storytelling through art is a powerful tool for fostering understanding and building community. Queer identity is complex, intersectional, and deeply personal, and this exhibition offers a platform for these truths to be seen, shared, and celebrated. It’s about visibility and connection—creating a space where queer stories are valued and experiences are expressed unapologetically.
Featuring over 30 LGBTQIA+ artists from across the Darling Downs, this exhibition showcases a dynamic range of work, from painting and photography to digital illustration, mixed media, sculpture, and film. For many queer individuals, art serves as more than just self-expression—it’s a way to process, resist, build community, and survive. Each piece in this exhibition tells a personal story while also contributing to a collective declaration, exploring themes of joy, struggle, resistance, and belonging.
Windows Into Queer Lives is not just an exhibition; it’s an invitation to immerse oneself in a space where queer voices are heard loudly and proudly. Audiences are encouraged to pause, reflect, and engage with a diverse array of works. Through shared storytelling, the exhibition highlights the power of queer creativity, the importance of visibility, and the defiant joy of existing as our fullest selves.
Curatorial Statement
Curated by a team of local queer artists, community members, and advocates, Windows Into Queer Lives was created with the intention of amplifying and affirming LGBTQIA+ voices. This exhibition is more than a collection of artworks—it’s a testament to creative expression as a form of resistance, healing, and connection across communities. Each piece tells a story—sometimes joyful, sometimes painful, always deeply authentic.
Art has long been a means of carving out spaces of belonging in a world that too often tries to erase us. This exhibition stands as a visual testimony to our community—to our lives, our stories, and our undeniable presence. We hope that for queer viewers, stepping into this space feels like home. That for young folk, it offers visibility, hope, and a reminder that they are not alone. And for everyone who walks through, it serves as a poignant reminder that queer stories matter.
We invite everyone—queer and non-queer folks alike—to engage, reflect, and, most importantly, listen. To witness the depth and diversity of these experiences, hold space for the voices shared here, and walk away with a deeper understanding of what it truly means to be seen.
